On the 2nd of March, the UK witnessed something extraordinary: from village halls to dance studios, care homes to schools, and even bustling city squares, the nation came alive with the sound of music and the sight of feet moving in unison. Angela Rippon’s “Let’s Dance” campaign wasn’t just an event; it was a movement, reminding us of the power of dance to connect, heal, and bring joy to communities across the country.
As part of the /together coalition, we were thrilled to play a role in this historic day. Together with dance organisations, charities, health professionals, and community groups, we helped create a moment that celebrated inclusivity, creativity, and the sheer joy of movement.

Why Dance? It Moves Us (Literally and Figuratively)
Dance is more than just a fun way to pass the time. It’s a lifeline, a way to tackle chronic health challenges, combat loneliness, and bridge divides. Whether you’re a ballroom veteran or someone who’s never set foot on a dance floor, Let’s Dance proved that there’s a place for everyone.
The campaign highlighted what we’ve always known: dance is a universal language. It doesn’t matter your age, fitness level, or experience. When the music starts, we’re all equals. On the 2nd of March, thousands of people across the UK felt that magic. From toddlers twirling in school halls to seniors swaying in care homes, the nation danced as one.
A Team Effort: Celebrating the Power of Collaboration
This campaign was a testament to what can happen when people come together with a shared vision. Angela Rippon, the driving force behind Let’s Dance, shared her thoughts with us:
“As the founder and ambassador of Let’s Dance, the UK’s first national dance movement, I’m overwhelmed by the incredible teamwork and dedication that has brought this vision to life. From the /together coalition and the Sport and Recreation Alliance to every dance teacher and organisation across the country, your support has been nothing short of extraordinary. Together, we’ve shown the transformative power of dance – not just for physical and mental health, but for bringing people together and inspiring those who might not usually dance to give it a go. I’m still in awe of what we’ve achieved, and I’m so proud to see this mission come to life.”
Organisations such as One Dance UK, Age UK, Creative UK, and the National Academy of Social Prescribing came together to bring this vision to life. By working in unison, we opened doors, broke down barriers, and ensured dance became accessible to everyone.
Highlights from Across the UK
The 2nd of March was a day to remember, as communities across the UK came together to celebrate the joy of movement through Let’s Dance. From seaside towns to iconic venues, the nation embraced dance in all its forms, proving that rhythm and connection know no bounds.
In Portrush, Northern Ireland, the town became a dance capital as hundreds of dancers gathered for a spectacular event hosted by Victoria Lagan Dance and Drama (VLDD). Dance groups from across the region, including Spotlight School of Acro NI, Naomi Orr School of Dance, and Ards Dance Centre, brought energy and creativity to the seaside resort. Angela Rippon herself expressed her delight at seeing Northern Ireland join the movement, highlighting the power of dance to unite communities.
Over in Ipswich, DanceEast and Ipswich School of Dancing teamed up to open their doors for a day of free workshops, meet-and-greets, and refreshments. From ballroom to hip hop, participants of all ages and abilities explored a variety of dance styles. Daisy Wyatt, programme manager at DanceEast, shared her excitement: *“We are thrilled to welcome new faces and share the magic of movement. Let’s Dance! Ipswich is all about bringing people together to experience the joy of dance.”
Meanwhile, Blackpool’s Winter Gardens played a starring role in the national celebration. Between 11am and 2pm, the iconic venue hosted a diverse programme of dance activities in its Floral Hall. From ballroom to classical Indian and jazz, the event showcased the universal appeal of dance. As part of the UK-wide initiative, the Winter Gardens joined thousands of venues in demonstrating how dance can transform lives, one step at a time.
In Ayrshire, Dumfries House hosted a special tea dance event as part of The King’s Foundation’s health and wellbeing programmes. Nearly 200 guests attended, including performers from Scottish Ballet Youth Exchange and the Pauline Auld Dance Academy. The event, designed to combat loneliness and isolation, brought together people of all ages to enjoy the magic of dance. Pauline Auld reflected on the day: “Dancing at Dumfries House is a memory that will stay with our young dancers for a very long time.”
Southport Market also joined the celebration, hosting a special event in support of Elsie’s Story, a charity launched in memory of seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe. The free event, held in the market’s Extravaganza Room, featured dance displays, cheerleaders, street dancers, tutorials, and workshops. A spokesperson for Southport Market said: “Everyone is welcome, and all abilities can join in. Whether you’re a secret toe-tapper, an off-beat clapper, or a Strictly Come Dancing professional, let’s enjoy the benefits and joy that dance brings us all. Dance gets us moving together to tackle chronic health challenges, combat loneliness, and spend time with people we wouldn’t usually meet.” Funds raised from the event will support Elsie’s Story, which focuses on community projects, medical care, and bringing people together in Elsie’s memory.

The campaign has sparked a national conversation about the benefits of dance—not just for physical health, but for mental wellbeing and community cohesion.
